Confession: I am a film nerd. I get a little too excited about a fresh roll, and I have opinions about light that nobody asked for. So why do I still shoot weddings on film? Simple. Film gives me a soft, timeless look I love, and I want my couples to have it forever.
I have been photographing weddings professionally since 2012, in New York City, Los Angeles, and now Las Vegas. Through all of it, film has stayed at the heart of my work. Here is what working with a film wedding photographer in Las Vegas means for you.
What Is the Fine Art Film Look? (Besides My Favorite Topic)
When people say "fine art film," they usually mean images that feel light, airy, and romantic. Skin tones look natural and warm. Highlights roll off gently instead of looking harsh. Colors feel soft and true rather than punchy.
Film also has a gentle grain and depth that is hard to copy exactly. It feels less like a snapshot and more like a memory.
Why Medium Format Film?
The Contax 645: My Favorite Coworker
My main film camera is the Contax 645. It is a medium format camera, which means the film is much larger than a standard 35mm frame. A bigger negative captures more detail and smoother tones.
The Contax is known among film photographers for its beautiful lenses and its soft, dreamy rendering. When I photograph a bride in window light or a couple at golden hour on the Contax, the results have a glow I have never found anywhere else. Yes, I talk to it. No, it does not answer.
Slowing Down (On Purpose, for Once)
Film also changes how I work. Each roll holds a limited number of frames, so I slow down and take my time. I look closely at the light. I wait for the moment. That patience shows up in the images.
Why Film Looks So Good in Las Vegas
In the desert near sunset, the light turns warm and soft, and film handles it beautifully. Red rock, pale sand, and open sky all render in gentle, natural color.
Film also loves soft shade and window light, which is perfect for getting ready photos and quiet portraits. And because film is so forgiving with bright highlights, it does well with the bright, sunlit look of a desert wedding.
How Film and Digital Work Together (A Happy Marriage)
I am not film-only, and that is good news for my couples. I shoot a hybrid of film and digital on every wedding.
When I Reach for Film
- Portraits of the two of you
- Details like rings, invitations, and florals
- Getting ready in soft window light
- Golden hour and outdoor moments
When I Reach for Digital
I also shoot with the latest digital cameras. I use them when speed and low light matter most:
- Ceremonies, where moments happen fast
- Dim receptions, dancing, and toasts
- Big candid moments where I need many frames quickly
- Nighttime city photos on the Strip or downtown
The two blend together in your final gallery. I edit my digital images with care so they sit naturally next to the film. You get the timeless feel of film along with the reliability and coverage of digital.
What Couples Get
A Complete Story
With film and digital together, plus a second photographer at every wedding, your day is covered from many angles. For an 8 to 10 hour wedding, I typically deliver about 1,000 edited images.
Images That Age Well (Unlike That Filter From a Few Years Ago)
Trendy editing styles come and go. Film has looked beautiful for generations. My goal is for your photos to feel just as lovely in thirty years as they do today.
An Engagement Session to Start
Every wedding booking includes a free engagement session. It is a great chance to see your own film images and get comfortable with me before the big day. Digital engagement galleries usually arrive in about 2 weeks, and film takes about 4 weeks because the rolls are developed and scanned at a lab. Good things take time. Film insists on it.
Is Film Right for You?
Film may be a great fit if you:
- Love soft, natural color and glowing skin tones
- Want photos that feel timeless rather than trendy
- Value a slower, more intentional experience
- Are planning an outdoor or desert wedding with lots of natural light
If you are not sure, that is okay. My hybrid approach means you never have to choose one or the other.
FAQ
Does film cost more than digital?
Film, developing, and scanning add real costs, but I build them into my work. My packages are flexible starting points and can be customized. Reach out and I will walk you through options for your day.
Is film risky for something as important as a wedding?
I have shot film at weddings for years, and I always shoot digital alongside it. With a second photographer there too, your day is well covered.
Will we be able to tell which photos are film?
Sometimes, and many couples love noticing the difference. I edit everything so the gallery feels cohesive and natural from start to finish.
